Parent Letter 3/27/17

3-27-17

Good morning Parents,

The dock is in and we are on the water for our 13th season.  Just a few items for this week

1.) Practice at the WBC:   Practice will be held at the Wyandotte Boat Club during the week from 6:00-8:30PM and on Saturdays from 8-11AM.  When dropping your rowers off, please drop them off on Pine Street.  Please stay out of the WBC parking lot unless you are planning on using the lounge while your rower is at practice.  Please note, the lounge is closed on Mondays.

2.) Ad Sale:  The ad sale ends this Saturday April 1st.  So far the team has sold just under $2000.00 in Ads.  This is about 1/2 of what we normally sell.  The goal is $125 per rower.  Rowers are responsible for ads.  What is not sold will be billed to the rowers individually.  This is a great way to cover the cost of the season without monies coming out of your own pocket.  All ads sold beyond $125 are applied at 80% to a rower’s individual account.

3.) Spring Break Practice times at the WBC:  We will be practicing twice per day over spring break which begins on Monday April 3rd.  Our competition that travels to camp will be rowing 3 times per day!  Water time over break is crucial to our team’s success.  Practice times over spring break will be as follows:   7am-9am and then again from 10am-noon.  With extended period of time at practice please send your rower with a snack to enjoy during the break and remind them to bring a change of clothes.

4.) Lightweights:  As of this afternoon most of our lightweights have completed this test.  For those few that haven’t, the deadline is this Friday.  Lightweight for girls is 130lbs max and 150lbs max for boy

5.) Website:  I’m in the process of rebuilding my website.  I originally built it in 2003.  Although I’ve kept the information updated the format was really out of date.   Sorry for the inconvenience.  Hopefully I’ll have it done by the end of the week.

If you have any questions please contact me,

Rowing Parent Letter 4/10/2017

4/10/17

Parents,

Spring Break Recap: We had a nice Spring Break. Although we didn’t get on the water Tuesday or Friday, the days we were on the water were super productive. Our rowers, especially the novices made great improvements. The kids have really been working hard and it should pay off with lots of hardware this season.

Fundraising & Clothing Orders: Fundraising season is over I’ll get invoices out to the kids sometime this week for balances due. Remember the cost of the season is $400. This first item of the clothing order is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. It is from Sew Sporty, so we will have jerseys to race in.

Schedule: I’ve attached a schedule for the next two weeks below. I passed this out to the kids at school today, so the intended audience was them, not parents, but I put some parent nots in italics.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.
Mark

Rowers read the following!!! (Parents too)

Today Monday April 10th– Day off from the Wyandotte Boat Club, but NOT a day off working out. With your boat warm-up, run 4 miles, nifty-nines, and stretch.
Tuesday April 11th, Wednesday April 12th, & Thursday April 13th – Practice in Wyandotte normal times 6-8:30pm. Be there NO EXCUSES! We are racing Friday and your boat will need to practice. If you’re not there, your boat won’t get to row.
Friday April 14th – Scrimmage v. Carlson & Riverview 8-11am (No School). We will race fours and then eights. Basic plan is this. Your four will go down the course twice v. Riverview and Carlson. Then you’ll have a short restroom break and the same thing will happen in eights. There is NO reason why you shouldn’t be on the road by 11am. (We have always practiced on Good Friday. It is normally the first day of Spring Training. With the Carlson back from Marietta, Ohio and Racing in the Lindamood Cup and Riverview back from Nashville, Tennessee, we are ready to do some racing.)
Saturday April 15th – Practice in Wyandotte 8-11am
Sunday April 16th – No Practice Easter Sunday
Monday April 17th – Practice in Wyandotte 8-11am (No School)
Tuesday April 18th – Practice in Wyandotte 6-8:30pm
Wednesday April 19th – Practice in Wyandotte 6-8:30pm
Thursday April 20th – WBC Regatta Sculling boats and Novice 4s race. Racing starts at 5pm. (Not everyone on the team will be racing on Thursday. Those not racing will practice at the same time races are running. Everyone should be done by 8pm on Thursday. If the weather doesn’t cooperate we can’t race on Thursday, those events will race on Friday.)
Friday April 21st – No Practice
Saturday April 22nd – WBC Regatta (If the weather is bad Saturday morning, we will race on Sunday morning.)
Sunday April 23rd – No Practice

This is the schedule, this is what you have been training for since the first week of January!

Parent Letter 4/19/17 – WBC Regatta

4/19/17

Parents,

WBC Regatta: This week is our first race.  This regatta is more or less a scrimmage.  Sculling events race on Thursday at 6pm and sweep events are held on Saturday.  Those not in sculling events (basically novices) will practice while races are being run.  Races will start at 7:40am on Saturday which means rowers will need to be at the club by 7am.  A schedule of events and rowers is found below.

Invoices:  With fundraising season behind us, we can now put 100% of focus on rowing.  With racing starting this week, regatta expenses are right around the corner.  There are a few rowers that have monies due.  Invoices were handed out at practice last week.  Rowers need to have their outstanding invoice paid so they can race.

Midwest Regatta:  For several years alumni Abe Baydoun ran a bus company and gave us one heck of a deal on a bus to this regatta.  Unfortunately, Abe is out of the bus business.   We are going to need to rent some vans for this event.  Our team is just not large enough to make a charter bus feasible.  Several parents have mentioned to me that they are going to this regatta.  If you are going and you can take a few rowers it would greatly help us out.  If you could PLEASE contact me ASAP and let me know how many kids you can take, I can figure out the van situation.  If we don’t need to rent a van we can use the savings toward equipment and equipment repairs.  This year we are staying at the Red Roof Inn in Hebron, Ohio.  The hotel is roughly half-way between Zanesville & Columbus.  We will leave from Crestwood Friday morning May 12th, except for those taking the AP Human Geography & AP Econ Exams who will leave after the test.  We will be staying Friday and Saturday night.  We will return to Dearborn Heights Sunday afternoon.

Parent Letter 4/24/17-Hebda Cup

4/24/17

Parents,

WBC Regatta Recap: Unfortunately, the weather didn’t really cooperate and the fishermen didn’t help.  I’ve left several messages with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Marine division over the unsafe boating of many of the fisherman on the river.   They have not gotten back to me.  I spoke with the Wyandotte Police Department that told me to keep calling the Sheriff since we are dealing with multiple jurisdictions.  I also left a message with the Police Chief on Grosse Ile.  The GI PD has a boat.  As Wayne County residents there is nothing preventing you from calling the Sheriff too.  Wayne County Sheriff Marine Division: 734-675-2660

As far as racing went, we didn’t do very well.  We have a lot of work to do before Hebda Cup on Saturday.  I hope those who raced gained valuable experience and we will NOT repeat the same mistakes this season.

I really appreciate your support Saturday there were a large number of parents, family members and friends in attendance. A giant thanks to my coaching staff.  They were all on the water acting as safety boats.  I was the only member of our staff on land Saturday.  A huge thanks to Mr. Janssen.  He used his own boat Saturday and acted as a safety boat.  Big thanks to Mrs. Maktari and Mrs. Puhl who worked the finish line.

Hebda Cup: Saturday is the 53rd  Hebda Cup Regatta (Rain date is Sunday).  It is the oldest continuous high school sporting event in the State of Michigan!  Rowers will need to be to the WBC by 6:30am. We are currently in the process of finalizing line ups for Saturday.  Entries are due tomorrow at 1pm.

There will be a food tent for the rowers if you can help out please contact Mrs. Puhl mbpuhl68@gmail.com or Mrs. Maktari asharm550@gmail.com

As the years have gone on, several of regular water safety boat volunteers kids have graduated, have retired out-of-state, and such.  If you want a great view of racing please consider volunteering for either Hebda or WY-HI as a safety boat driver or a safety boat spotter.  Please contact Fred Mekolon fmekolonjr@yahoo.com Please tell Coach Fred which regatta or regattas and times you are able to help.  As many of you witnessed Saturday, the WBC needs as much help as possible.

Midwest Regatta:  So far Mr. Gimik has said he was traveling to Midwest and was able to take some rowers with him.  If you are going and you can take a few rowers it would greatly help us out.  If you could PLEASE contact me ASAP and let me know how many kids you can take.  If we don’t need to rent a van we can use the savings toward equipment.

Skyline Scrimmage:  On Thursday (April 27th), the Boys Quads will be traveling to Ann Arbor to scrimmage with Ann Arbor Skyline.  This is the first of what I hope will be many scrimmages.  Skyline is a regional and national powerhouse.  The plan is to leave Crestwood right after school on Thursday and head to Ann Arbor.  We will begin racing at 4pm.  The plan is to do 6x1000mGoogle Maps says the time to the WBC from Crestwood is 32 minutes.  The time from Crestwood to where Skyline practices behind Concordia University in Ann Arbor is 34 minutes.

Parents,

53rd Hebda Regatta Recap: We had a good day.  We were 6 seconds away from having a great day!  On the men’s side we tied for second with Anthony Wayne.  For the Combined points trophy we tied for Third with Grosse Ile and Riverview.

  • For the men, we won the Lightweight Eight (Nathan, Reese, Nick, Jordon, Tom, Viktor, Kristian, Moe-Ali, and Mackenzie) and the Quad (Mark, Nick, Reese, Nathan). The Lightweight Four (Nathan, Kristian, Moe-Ali, Tom, and Viktor) took a solid second.  The Novice Eight qualified for finals but had a tough time in the final.  In heats, the Novice A Four made a critical mistake in the first 50m of the race.  If that didn’t occur, I was assured by a regatta official that they would have won their heat with little effort.  The Novice B Four had a solid 3rd place finish, but it was 2 to qualify in that event.
  • For the women, we took second in the Women’s Double (Rema & Victoria). We also placed second in the Women’s Quad (Jenean, Hadil, Rema, & Victoria.  The Women’s Junior Four would have qualified if they didn’t have a steering issue.
  • There is a great article in the Dearborn Press and Guide about the Regatta with lots of photos: http://www.miprepzone.com/pressandguide/results.asp?ID=9827 There are also photos that were taken by Row2k: http://www.row2k.com/gallery/gallery.cfm?action=gallery&dir=2017Spring%2F0429HebdaCup&offset=72&label=Hebda+Memorial+Cup&hi=yes
  • Big thanks to the parents and Crestwood community members who came out to support us like Mr. Brennan and Ed Garcia. A huge thanks our Parents Group and Volunteers; Mr. and Mrs. Puhl, Mr. and Mrs. Maktari, and Mr. Gimik, who fed our rowers and coaches during the regatta. Mrs. Helton and Mrs. Coulter were a great help with setting up & taking down the tent.  Thanks to Mrs. Manassra, Mrs. Kiker, and Mrs. Janssen who also helped with setting up food and the coolers. Please forgive me if I missed anyone.

WY-HI Regatta: Saturday is the 46th Wyandotte High Schools Rowing Regatta (Rain date is Sunday).  Rowers will need to be to the WBC by 6:30am.

  • As the years have gone on, several of regular water safety boat volunteers kids have graduated, have retired out-of-state, and such. If you want a great view of racing please consider volunteering for WY-HI as a safety boat driver or a safety boat spotter.  Please contact Fred Mekolon fmekolonjr@yahoo.com if you would like to help.
  • We are finalizing our entries this evening. I’ll post them at some point tomorrow.

Parents,

WY-HI Regatta Recap: Well the weather got the best of us.  At least it wasn’t raining.  Most of our races on Saturday were final only events and the regatta was cancelled after 8 of 24 finals were run.  Only two of our boats got to race in finals and both medaled.  The Womens Quad (Rema, Victoria, Duha, & Jenean) took Gold and the Mens Lightweight Eight (Nathan, Reese, Nick, Jordon, Tom, Viktor, Kristian, Moe-Ali, and Mackenzie) took Bronze.  The article about Wy-Hi was just posted on MI Prep Zone:  http://www.miprepzone.com/pressandguide/results.asp?ID=9837 Thanks to all of those who came out and supported us on a cold windy Saturday like Mrs. Kiker, Mrs. Stamps, Mr. & Mrs. Bycraft, Mrs. Friedrich, and Mrs. Janssen.  A huge thanks our Parents Group and Volunteers; Mr. and Mrs. Puhl, Mr. and Mrs. Maktari, and Mr. Gimik, who fed our rowers and coaches during the regatta. Mrs. Helton and Mrs. Coulter helped run the Sew Sporty tent.  I understand Mrs. Manassra helped everywhere from food, to Sew Sporty, to yelling at Mazen (well cheering for him) on the water. Please forgive me if I missed anyone.

Midwest Regatta:  This regatta makes for a very long weekend.  Hopefully I’ve captured all information in the bullet points below:

  • The Basics: We leave on Friday and unload, rig, and practice row on the course. Saturday Heats begin at 7am and Semi-finals last well into the evening.  Finals run Sunday morning.  We will be staying in Hebron, Ohio Friday and Saturday night, which is about 40 minutes from the course.  We will return to Dearborn Heights Sunday afternoon/evening.
  • Traveling there: Thanks for all of those who have volunteered to drive. It is because of your support that we can keep the cost of the season at $400 per kid.  I’ve included the Car Matrix below.
    • Regatta Site: DILLON STATE PARK GPS Address: 5265 Dillon Hills Drive Nashport, OH 43830
    • Hotel: Red Roof Inn 10668 Lancaster RD Southwest Hebron, OH 43025 (740-467-7663)
    • Non-AP Testers: Those NOT testing on Friday Morning will leave from the Crestwood Staff parking lot at 7:30am, make a brief stop for lunch, and proceeded to the race course.
    • AP Testers: Those taking AP Human Geography & AP Micro Economics Exams will leave after the test from the Crestwood Staff lot. They will make a very brief and early in the trip stop for lunch before heading to the race course.
  • Student ID: At this regatta, student ID’s are checked at the dock before launch.
  • USRA Waiver: This year the U.S. Rowing Association has gone to an online wavier. In order to race this weekend the wavier MUST be completed online.
  • As for racing at MSRA: There will be 46 teams and there are 532 entries.  We have 18 boats entered.  Entries are found below the car matrix.  Heats Sheets should be available on Regatta Central sometime this evening or tomorrow morning.

Parent Letter 5-15-17 Midwest Recap & remainder of the season

May 15, 2017

Good afternoon parents,

Midwest recap:  We had a great weekend in Zanesville.  The water was almost perfect (cross head wind isn’t fun to race in).  We had 7 boats race in the finals which is the most ever for our team.  We took bronze in the Women’s Junior Quad (Alia, Victoria, Jenean, and Hadil) and in the Men’s Junior Quad (Jordon, Kristian, Moe-Ali, and Tom).  The Men’s Varsity Pair (Reese and Nathan) and the Men’s Lightweight Double (Moe-Ali and Tom) missed a bronze in their finals by less than a second!  The Men’s Novice Four missed Semi Finals by 5.19 seconds and the Men’s Light Four Missed Semi Finals by 5.69 seconds.  The Men’s Novice Lightweight Four beat Ann Arbor Skyline.  For being a small team we finished 19th of 42 teams in the overall points trophy.  We have a very competitive team and our kids performed well at our regional regatta.  Of the 31 kids that went to Midwest this weekend we are only losing 6 to graduation.  I expect an even better showing next year!

I want to extend a giant thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Puhl, Mr. and Mrs. Maktari, Mrs. Helton, Mr. and Mrs. Horton, Mrs. Coulter, Mrs. Manassra and Mr. Gimik who drove our kids to and from the regatta and fed our kids this weekend.  Mrs. Stamps and Mr. Badawi also made the trek to Ohio to cheer our kids on as did many brothers and sisters.  Coach Chris wasn’t the only coach to have his mom there.  Coach Jeff’s mom, Mrs. Lee came to Midwest too.  Please forgive me if I missed anyone.  I’m pretty tired.

Midwest is the last race of the year with the novice category.  For the rest of the season age determines junior.  The rule is if you did NOT turn 16 by January 1, 2017, you are a junior.  Lightweight also changes.  For the Men it is 72kg (158lbs) and 66kg (145lbs) and for the Women it is 63kg (138.8lbs) and 59kg (130lbs).  Juniors can race in the senior events, but seniors cannot race in the junior events.  Lightweights can race in midweight and open events, but heavy weights and mid weights can’t race down.

State Championship (Saturday May 20th  Grand Rapids, MI): This is a select crew regatta for our team because there are no novice events, no quads, no B entries, and it still follows the 11th grade rule, not the age rule, and American lightweight rules.  However, there is a Freshman four.  This is a race that ONLY exists at the regatta.  Based on 2k results at practice today, we will try to see which events fit us the best.  We have until 5PM tomorrow to have our entries in.  I will let you know what is racing tomorrow.   Rowers not racing at States will have practice on Saturday morning from 8-11am.

Welland Regatta (Saturday May 20th and May 21st Welland, Ontario):  This is a select crew regatta.  Last year was the first time we attended this regatta.   This race favors the Canadian Junior category.  The tentative plan is to leave Friday 7am from the Wyandotte Boat Club. The rules will allow for us to race both Saturday and Sunday.  We will be staying at the dorms at Niagara College.

WOSS Regatta (Saturday May 27th London, ON): The entire team will race at this regatta. We will be taking a school bus!  In order to travel to Canada, all rowers will need one of the following two options:

  • Option#1: Passport or State of Michigan enhanced ID
  • Option#2: School ID & Birth certificate

CSSRA Regatta (Friday 2nd, 3rd, & 4th St. Catharines, ON):  This is a select crew regatta.  We will have a determination on which crews we will be taking by tomorrow.  This regatta is NOT a budgeted race because not everyone goes so there will be a fee accessed for this race.   The fee is normally around $150 and doesn’t include food.

Parent letter 5-18-17 States Info-Updated

5-18-17

Parents,

1.) No Practice in Wyandotte Today (Thursday May 18th):  Mother nature is being uncooperative this week.  We won’t be able to get on the water.  Instead of driving to Wyandotte, all rowers need to run 4 miles in Dearborn Heights this afternoon.

2.) Boat Loading 3pm Tomorrow (Friday May 19th) :  We are sharing a trailer to States with Riverview.  Boat loading begins at 3pm.  I know our kids will be a little late.

3.) Car matrix for Grand Rapids (Saturday May 20th):  This is the most kids we have ever taken to States.  For the kids who aren’t racing, you are welcome to attend.  Normally those who don’t race have practice, but all of the coaches available this weekend are driving to States and I’m out of coaches to run practice and seats for States.  I’m truly sorry.  Address for Comstock Riverside Park: 2001 Monroe Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505  We need to be on the road by 5am.  It’s 2 hours and 20 minutes to the course.  First race will launch arond 8:20am.

4.) WY-HI Regatta Ad book:  I just got an e-mail from the WY-HI regatta chairman.  I understand that all the 1/12 page ads were left out of the program by the printer.  He is printing a book with the teams pictures in it as sort of a yearbook to make up for it.

5.) London Regatta (Saturday May 27th) and St. Catharines Regatta (June 2,3,&4):  I’ll have entry information Saturday.

Have a great afternoon,

Mark
